Crawl Space Restoration FAQ’s

A crawl space is a dark and creepy place.  It is not a place that you generally enjoy visiting, but it plays such a crucial role in the overall health of your home.  Think about all the important elements of your home that are housed in your crawl space like air ducts, plumbing, insulation and the structural components of the home and you can see that it is an important area to maintain.  And, since this is an area that you probably do not go very often (or ever)  you may have significant issues down there that you don’t even know about.

Crawl spaces do not get contaminated and unhealthy overnight, so it takes quite some time to get to the point where major work needs to be done.  Usually by the time that we are crawled in, severe contamination has taken place.  Probably the most common cause for needing a complete crawl space restoration is when rodents infest the insulation under your home.  Since about 40% of the air that you breathe comes from the crawl space, you can imagine that things can get pretty unhealthy when things get out of hand.

When is it time to do a restoration?

This is completely a matter of opinion and a matter of tolerance on the part of the home owner.  Generally, we will start to recommend a restoration of the crawl space when the air quality becomes affected.  We are going to take a close look at your air ducts and determine if there are any leaks and also check how far the infestation has spread.  If we find more than 25% of the crawl space contaminated, we might suggest it at that point.

Are there alternatives to doing a full crawl space restoration?

Yes.  Sometimes a partial restoration is all that is needed.  This is where you need to be careful and be sure to get multiple bids.  If you just go with one company, they might suggest doing a full restoration when only a portion of the crawl space is needed.

Will you get sick if you don’t do a restoration?

Probably not, but it is not the healthiest air quality.  There are some companies that love to use scare tactics, but that is not something that we believe in.  Could you get sick?  Of course that is a possibility, but it is not common and we are not here to raise alarm.  We just want to make sure that every area of your home is healthy and believe that the crawl space is an important part of that.

Look, a crawl space restoration is an awfully big investment and we don’t take that lightly.  If you are in the process of deciding whether or not to do one, be sure to be asking questions.  We can assist you with that or give you other resources to check out.  If you need some help, please give us a call.
