Having a functioning sump pump in your crawl space can make the difference in keeping your home free of a lot of moisture related problems. Sump pumps are a great option for stopping standing water from accumulating underneath your home and keeping your crawl space dry. At New Leaf, our technicians and contractors have extensive experience in designing and installing drainage systems in the Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington area.
What is a sump pump?
A sump pump prevents water from pooling and collecting in a crawl space by pumping it out to an exterior drain point. It consists mainly of a basin with a pump that is installed at the lowest point of crawl space. When water begins to fill the basin, the pump automatically kicks on and drains the basin. Water from the basin is diverted out in pipes that are usually attached to the gutter drain system underground.
Why you should install a sump pump
A working sump pump stops standing water from forming underneath your home. Standing water can significantly damage a home by deteriorating pier posts, the subfloor and other structural elements in a crawl space. In addition to structural concerns, excessive moisture in a crawl space can become a health concern by creating a conducive condition for mold.
